SBBC Student Highlighted in Extern Site’s Newsletter

Rachel Stepka, currently enrolled in the business administration bachelor’s degree program at SBBCollege Santa Barbara, was recently highlighted in the August 2011 newsletter of Casa Esperanza for the services she has provided them.

As a recent graduate of the College’s business associate’s degree program, Rachel completed her externship at Casa Esperanza, a center for the homeless of Santa Barbara, as part of her program. Casa Esperanza appreciates all that Rachel has done for them – which included administrative work and serving as the first point of contact at the front desk – and thanks her in their “Spotlight on our Volunteers” section of their newsletter.

“By helping both the staff and members of Casa Esperanza, Rachel makes a difference each time she walks through the doors to volunteer…Casa is thankful to rely on dedicated volunteers like Rachel!”

After giving the student speaker address at her graduation ceremony in June, Rachel decided to continue her education with SBBCollege and earn herbachelor’s degree in business administration. While she continues to volunteer at Casa Esperanza, Rachel also works full time as a guest services representative in Santa Barbara.

SBBCollege is proud of the accomplishments Rachel has achieved thus far, and wishes her luck in her bachelor’s program and future endeavors!

Women Advance in Criminal Justice Fields

In today’s society, we find more and more women in high-level positions in the criminal justice field. This is strongly evident in Ventura County, where women hold several of the highest positions in law enforcement.

As reported in the Ventura County Star’s “Women in law enforcement come from diverse backgrounds,” Ventura County has two of the 22 female police chiefs in California, in the cities of Oxnard and Port Hueneme. The County is also home to a female sheriff’s captain, and many female officers spanning several fields in the state’s criminal justice system.

These female officers lead several hundred law enforcement officers, all while balancing their lives as mothers, wives and students.

Oxnard Police Chief Jeri Williams, for one, has risen in the ranks while also earning her master’s degree and working towards her doctorate degree. She is also a wife and mother to two teenage boys.

These women serve as positive role models for all those ladies looking to begin careers in the criminal justice field. While hard work and dedication are key factors for rising in the ranks, education can also contribute to advancement.

For those looking to advance in the criminal justice system or those seeking employment as an investigator, police officer, probation officer, youth advocate etc., they can benefit greatly from having a degree in the criminal justice field.

SBBCollege Santa Maria holds Community Blood Drive

Wanting to give back to their community, Santa Barbara Business College invited the United Blood Services to their Santa Maria campus for two community blood drives this summer.

Held on June 30th and August 4th, students, staff, faculty and the public were invited to participate in the blood drives. To raise awareness of the drive and to get everyone into the spirits of things, local radio station 95.7 The Beat also participated with a live remote on-site.

The blood drive proved to be a successful partnership between the College and United Blood Services. Many SBBCollege students were more than willing to donate, and saw it as a great opportunity to give back to their community.

The College’s medical assisting students in particular deal with needles and blood draws on a daily basis – as they prepare for their careers as medical assistants by practicing on each other – and readily allowed United Blood Services phlebotomists to draw their blood.

“SBBCollege students are great. They like to stick each other all day. They know what’s involved in the process, and are willing to donate,” said United Blood Services recruiter Chris P.

SBBCollege Santa Maria continues to look for ways to participate in and give back to their community, and looks forward to hosting more blood drives in the future.

The College is currently accepting applications for enrollment in their medical assisting program, as well as their recently added bachelor’s degree programs in business administration, criminal justice, and healthcare administration.

SBBCollege Student Featured in National Magazine Article

Anna Henson, a student at SBBCollege’s Bakersfield campus, was recently highlighted in the national magazine, The Link, about how she balances school with her family life.

The Link, a quarterly magazine published by the Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities, dedicated an entire issue to women in career education. While these women attend college to better their circumstances, they also still manage their families and personal lives – becoming master multi-taskers.

Between studying and parenting her two young daughters, Anna balances it all. Her goal is to improve the quality of life for her family – both in the future with her new career opportunities and in the present, as Anna and her daughters share quality time over dinner and homework.

Anna feels that it’s very important to go back to school, especially for single mothers, and also knows the importance of being there for her daughters after school. “I know that it’s really important to have dinner with my kids. Setting the table and having dinner together does make a difference, my kids have a lot to say!”

Anna is a role model to other students and single mothers. With support from Santa Barbara Business College, she proves that balancing the two – school and family – is possible, and can be done!

Read about Anna’s story in the article, “The Balancing Game: Women Students Master Multi-tasking,” in its entirety here.

New Medical Program at Santa Barbara Business College is a HIT

Earlier today, Santa Barbara Business College began enrolling students into a new medical program. The Health Information Technology program, abbreviated HIT, is the latest degree program added to the College’s catalog of medical program offerings.

“The Health Information Technology program provides students with the skills necessary for employment in billing, coding, and administration positions in a medical office or facility,” says Joslyn Buckner, SBBCollege Director of Career Services. The new program is a comprehensive medical office program, encompassing medical office administration, medical coding and billing, and integrated computer applications. Graduates of the program, which can be completed in less than two years, will receive an Associate of Science degree in Health Information Technology.

Courses in the HIT program include medical terminology, medical document coding, medical billing procedures, and electronic health records, among others. Students in the program also participate in an externship, where they work in the medical field, practice what they’ve learned in the classroom and receive real-world work experience before they graduate.

“Our comprehensive curriculum prepares students for the skills they need to be successful in today’s modern medical office,” says instructor Debbie Newcomb. With more than 25 years of experience in medical office management and 18 years as a college instructor, Newcomb helped create the new program. “HIT includes training in the latest trends in medicine, including electronic health records, which is the hottest topic in medical management at the present time.”

“Some students are squeamish about needles and direct patient care but want a career in the medical field,” Buckner said. “Our medical office programs are perfect in this situation.” In addition to HIT, the College offers a short-term career-training program in Medical Office Administration. The Medical Office Administration program is a basic introduction to the medical field, preparing students to work in an entry-level medical front desk position. By contrast, the HIT program provides advanced training in medical coding and a more comprehensive medical office education.

Graduates of the HIT program are prepared for positions as medical records technicians or medical billers. Career opportunities include private practices, hospitals, clinics and insurance companies.

The Health Information Technology program will be offered at each of the College’s campuses, located in Santa Barbara, Ventura, Santa Maria, Bakersfield,Rancho Mirage and Online.

Santa Barbara Business College was founded in 1888 and is one of the oldest colleges in the nation. The accredited College offers academic degree and career-training programs in the fields of business, criminal justice, paralegal studies, nursing and early childhood education.

Santa Barbara Business College Prepares Students for the Medical Field

Looking for a way to get started in the medical field? Have you always pictured yourself wearing scrubs to work and working hands-on with patients? Why not start your medical career as a medical assistant? With training in Santa Barbara Business College’s medical assisting program, students can earn their medical degree and be prepared to enter a field with lots of medical job opportunities.

SBBCollege’s medical assisting program teaches students how to prepare patients for treatment, assist physicians, perform blood draws, assess vital signs, and do so much more. It even includes an externship program where students actually work in a professional medical environment and receive real-world work experience in the field before they graduate.

SBBC’s medical training program introduces students to available opportunities open to a health care professional. Interested in working more with lab work? Assisting physicians? Will you continue your medical education and become a nurse or a doctor?

Carolyn, a soon-to-be graduate of SBBCollege’s medical assisting program in Santa Barbara, loved the variety of SBBC’s medical training. By learning different aspects of the medical field in class, and working in the field and receiving hands-on training during her externship, Carolyn found a passion for the medical lab.

“You learn so much here. And that lets you choose which field you want to go into. For me, it was labs. That’s why I chose to extern at the endoscopy department at the local hospital. That was quite an experience. I was able to watch a lot of endoscopic procedures. I got the opportunity to be down in the OR and see a procedure called a septal closure. It was really exciting because it’s a hard surgery. It’s when they open up the heart with a catheter. I was right there, and it was quite an experience.”

Carolyn will be graduating from the SBBCollege Santa Barbara campus this spring. She hopes to begin her new medical career in a medical lab.

Along with their other Southern California campuses, Santa Barbara Business College offers the medical assisting program at their Santa Barbara campus, as either a job training diploma or an associate’s degree program. They’re currently accepting applications, and have a start coming up soon!

SBBC Students Volunteer Medical Services to National Kidney Foundation

Students in the medical assisting program at Santa Barbara Business College’s campuses in Ventura and Santa Barbara volunteered their medical services to the National Kidney Foundation in February 2011, as part of the Foundation’s Kidney Screening Program in Santa Barbara.

The event provided free health screenings to the public, particularly those who have a higher risk for kidney disease. Medical students from SBBCollege volunteered their time to help screen community members, which included height and weight measurements, blood pressure measurements, blood tests and urine tests to assess risks related to kidney disease.

“The free kidney screening was a great gift to the people of our community, especially during these tough times when many people do not have health insurance,” says Vidal, an employee of the County of Santa Barbara. “I took advantage of the free screening because I wanted to find out if I was in good health or if I was at risk. Fortunately my screening results were great! Learning that I am at no risk of diabetes or kidney disease has motivated me to take better care of myself, by eating right and exercising more often.”

With local campuses in Ventura and Santa Barbara, SBBCollege has a long history of working with the local community. The College provides volunteer services and career training to the campus’ surrounding communities.

Founded in 1888, Santa Barbara Business College offers the medical assisting program at their campuses in Santa Barbara, Ventura, Santa Maria, Bakersfield and Rancho Mirage.
