SBBCollege searches for former stars

SBBCollege is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year and to mark this significant milestone they are on a quest to track down their former alumni and invite them to be part of a seminal moment in the College’s history.

One of the oldest colleges in the US, SBBCollege would like former students of all ages to be part of the celebrations. A series of special events have been organized across the College’s campuses throughout September to commemorate the special anniversary.

Matthew Johnston, SBBCollege President, comments: ‘Since the College opened in 1888 we have had thousands of students come through our doors and who have all benefited from our outstanding guidance and support.  This anniversary marks a significant chapter in the history of this great institution and we would like to invite our former students to join us in our 125th anniversary celebrations. Our former students have played a prominent role in the history of SBBCollege so we would be delighted to welcome them back.’

‘We are already looking to the future and are determined to continue producing students that not only find jobs quickly but are equipped to achieve their true potential in business and in life.’

The College, which opened its doors in 1888, was originally founded as a co-ed finishing college by education visionary J.E. Metzger. In the early days the College educated teachers and offered courses in banking, merchandizing, shorthand, typing and business law.

Over the years, the College added programs to meet the demands of emerging industries and technology and expanded to five communities in Southern California. Throughout the last century – including the Great Depression, countless earthquakes, and two world wars, SBBCollege was a constant presence along California’s Central Coast.

Today the College has students in five campus locations – Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, Bakersfield, Ventura and Rancho Mirage as well as a growing number of online students from across the United States and beyond. Areas of study include business, healthcare, law and IT.

International students hone English skills

International students hone english skills

40 international students are to graduate this Friday July 26th from a three week intensive English Language and American Culture Program in preparation for college next year.

The English Explorer program at SBBCollege Santa Barbara gives international students the opportunity to refresh their language skills ahead of the oncoming semester. As part of the course, the college also takes the students to American legacies, such as Disneyland and Universal Studios, to give them a better understanding of American culture.

Cláudia Wilroy, Chief Operations Officer at SBBCollege Santa Barbara, says: ‘The English Explorer program is highly popular with our international students who find it highly beneficial when moving to the area. We’re proud that students from all over the world choose to study at SBBCollege and we have a responsibility to ensure that these students are given the support they need to learn and grow.’

This year the college launched an Explorer Criminal Justice program, running alongside the English Explorer classes, which covers aspects of the US criminal justice system. Additional activities include jail tours, mock trials and crime scene demonstrations.

Both programs, which come at a time when the college is celebrating its 125th anniversary, are a nod towards the future of college education.

Cláudia Wilroy continues: ‘We now live in a world which, through the advances in technology and social networking, heavily relies on international integration. Our main goal at SBBCollege is to prepare our students for success in the future so creating a learning environment which is culturally diverse is a huge benefit to everyone.’

SBBCollege offers Nursing Career Information Session to assist with nursing shortage

SBBCollege Santa Maria is holding a program to address the nursing shortage in California. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the state of California is looking to fill 800,000 vacant positions in the nursing field within the next two years*.

SBBCollege Santa Maria will be holding a Nursing Career Information Session on Tuesday, June 18th at 4:30pm. This session will educate perspective students on the benefits of a career in nursing and on the relevant courses offered at the College. A former graduate from the nursing program at the College and who is now currently employed in the nursing profession will be on hand to offer their experiences and to inspire students considering a career in this area.

Currently, California falls far short of the national average of 825 registered nurses employed per 100,000 head of population. The state has only 653 registered nurses employed per 100,000 people – and a shortage for vocational nurses is similar.

Joseph Liddicote, Campus Director of SBBCollege Santa Maria, comments: ‘Nursing is a challenging yet incredibly rewarding career and is a crucial part of the healthcare team. We aim to train the next generation of caregivers for the Santa Maria community — and in all care settings, including hospitals, outpatient centers, community clinics, physician offices, schools and nursing homes.

‘Job outlook is expected to be strong for years to come with The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimating that nursing will create approximately 587,000 new jobs nationally by 2016*. The program is designed for students looking to realize their potential in the nursing field and I look forward to meeting them at the event.’

Students in the SBBCollege Vocational Nursing Program learn vital signs assessment, medication administration and other patient care skills in a clinical setting. The hands-on training provides students an understanding of skills for patient care and safety, such as hygiene, feeding, transfer techniques, medication administration, oxygen administration, Foley catheter insertion and care, tracheostomy care, and wound care. The students practice the techniques they learn in a supervised laboratory setting and then perfect them at clinical sites with real patients.

Santa Barbara Business College Raises Over $250 for Walk4Water

Students, faculty and staff of Santa Barbara Business College joined the ‘Walk4Water’ charity walk on Santa Barbara’s East Beach last Saturday, May 4th, and raised $268 for families in need around the world.

The charity walk’s goal was to raise awareness for the need for clean and safe water, as every day 25,000 people die globally because of no access to sanitized water. Organized by ‘Hands4Others,’ a movement fighting to change the world one person at a time with drinkable water, the donations of the walk will be used to help families and villages in poverty stricken countries in Middle America, Africa and South East Asia. With nearly 2 million children dying each year of water related causes, water supply and treatment systems are greatly needed.

Students, faculty and staff of SBBCollege Santa Barbara participated in the walk as part of the College’s community service program, SBBCollege Cares, which calls out the Santa Barbara campus into the community to provide service where needed.

The money raised from SBBCollege will provide five families or 27 children with access to a safe water source.

The four mile walk, which went along the beautiful shoreline park towards the harbor and back, was greatly enjoyed by all. SBBCollege Cares will be back next year to increase awareness and raise more donations!

For more information on SBBCollege or SBBCollege Cares, please call the Santa Barbara campus at (805) 967-9677 or visit www.sbbcollege.edu.

Medical Assisting Graduate Embarks on New Career

Video Transcript:

Deborah Helm – Medical Assisting Graduate 2013

Why did you go back to school? Well as you can tell, I’m a lot older than most of the students. Life had brought changes and I found I needed a change of career. I had always been really interested in the medical field and I thought now is the time to do it. Although there were a lot of questions and I really wasn’t sure, I came to check out Santa Barbara Business College and I think it’s the best decision I’ve made. It has been a wonderful experience for me.

What did you learn at SBBCollege? I learned how to do venipunctures, learned how to do EKGs and as well as all the laboratory things we would do, learn a lot about the body itself – anatomy and physiology and I love that. But I also love the hands-on things; working with patients. We used each other of course, but I really enjoy people and I think it’s important that they’re well taken care of when they face potential medical issues and help them maintain their health if they have good health.

Thoughts about SBBCollege: It’s come so fast, I mean it’s amazing; Santa Barbara Business College was a huge help and incredibly supportive. I’ve never been to a school, I’ve gone to a university before and other colleges in getting classes that I needed for my diploma, but I’ve never been to a school where faculty and administration are so determined to have their students succeed. It really impressed me and they are so available to help with whatever you need, so given all that – I can utilize so much of what I learned at SBBC and I plan to take it and go as far as I can because I really love it and appreciate the help that I got here.
