paralegal studies degree | SBBC

The Paralegal Studies degree program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of both the theory and application of the procedures used in law offices by paralegals, enabling them to assist attorneys in areas such as research, reporting, and the preparation of legal documents, agreements, exhibits, and other relevant tasks prior to trial.

Paralegal studies degree students are also provided with client interview skills, basic investigative techniques, how to conduct legal research, and the art of briefing case law. Post-graduate employment for paralegal studies degree students is primarily in private law offices, but placement opportunities also exist in bank trust departments, insurance companies, government at all levels, and paralegal-only services.

Paralegal Careers

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that employment for paralegals is set to increase by 15% from 2016-2026 (www.bls.gov), which is faster than average. Employment for paralegal professionals is expected to be driven by law firms choosing to employ more paralegals, who can often do the work of lawyers for less cost.

Approximately 70% of all paralegals work in private law firms. The rest work mainly as in-house legal staff for businesses, corporations or for government agencies. Paralegals may also choose to work on a self-employed basis, operating as freelance employees. Many paralegal studies degree graduates will find themselves starting as entry-level paralegals and then working their way up the ranks.
